Cost is a key reason why many Western companies source chemicals from China and India. Unsurprisingly, the lowest price does not always equate to the best value, as suppliers offering rock-bottom prices often come with risks, such as inconsistent quality, poor communication and missed deadlines

Delays and failures more often lead to additional costs, operational disruptions, and reputational damage, which makes it important to strike a balance between competitive pricing and dependable service.

2 – Experience

When sourcing specialist chemicals – such as pharmaceutical intermediates or novel compounds for drug discovery – the cost and lead time largely depend on the complexity of custom synthesis and the level of R&D required. The more intricate the chemical, the greater the R&D investment, and the associated costs and longer timelines.

Techniques such as NMR or MS will confirm the chemical structure, while HPLC or GC can verify purity levels, with this data confirming that the supplier has actually synthesized the material before, and that it meets the required standards.
